So I've been looking at laptops trying to find one for college. Hopefully one that I can manage EQ on. I was wondering what you guys thought. Need as many opinions as i can get. =)

This one doesn't look too bad.

If you recommend something else let me know.

It's a HP. Never, ever buy a HP / Compaq / Gateway for that matter.

Try this place, They have some decent deals and you can choose most of whats in your laptop.

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/ntbkx649550.asp?v=d#configurator_top

I got one of their desktops back in 2003 and have been using since, about to get new one though cause this one is starting to fall apart big time. Also look into E-Machines, I had one of their laptops and it was great. Withstood the harshness of the Iraqi desert with flying colors. I was knocking sand and dust out of it for 2 years after I got back from there before I sold it to pay some bills. Tigerdirect.com also has some pretty good deals on refurbished systems (what my e-machines was) for a good price. I personally would stay far away from gateway and have no opinion on dell, HP/compaq. I have not used them much and have not heard much about them to give an opinion. Hope you find something your looking for for a good price.

The Sonys are nice, but overpriced for the most part. I'm not sure what kind of warranty/tech support they offer. We are a Dell shop when it comes to laptops / desktops, and use IBM servers.

I also have 2 Dells at home. Their tech support for the most part is pretty quick, sometimes hard to understand. Only problem I ever had was a bad memory stick once. Now at work, we had a huge issue with bad capacitors and had to replace close to 400 mobo's. That sucked donkey dick.

I'd recommend a Dell. Sounds like you might be on a tight budget with college and everything, but if you weren't I go for an Dell XPS. The XPS now has several lines, some of which are affordable, and still better then the average laptop.

I'm a bit of a computer geek, but if you want a performance laptop and you dont want to break that bank just buy the parts and build one, its much cheaper and you will get exactly what you want. Also, hp/compaq laptops are a bitch and 3/4 to work on so that pretty much you have to send them back to the company to get them fixed, others can do it but its no fun at all.

The system that I use at home is a Fujitsu Lifebook, and I highly recommend looking into them. They pioneered the screen technology that is being used by most Japenese companies these days, and I have not had any issues with my laptop since I purchased it 3 years ago. The only upgrade for it that I have done is added more memory about a year ago, which was so easy to do due to the laptop configuration.

Good Luck out there..

I bought a Sony Vaio back in 2001 or 2002 don't remember exactly now, wanted to be able to play EQ while I was on the road for work. It crashed on the initial boot and it went down hill from there. So I can't vouch for it. I've been running a HP Pavilion for the last two years with exactly 0 problems. It's a great machine, but then again, it's no laptop. Good luck with your search.

Ok. So after building the best i could for the best price i could get, i came up with this. Yes, it's an HP, but the specs seem decent for $1600.

HP Pavilion dv9500t customizable Notebook PC
RL653AV
– Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
– Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7300 (2.0GHz/4MB L2Cache)
– 17.0" WXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1440x900)
– 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
– 511MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
– FREE Upgrade to HP Imprint Finish + Webcam + Microphone
– Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection
– 200GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (100GB x 2)
– Super Multi 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
– No TV Tuner w/remote control
– High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
– Norton Internet Security(TM) 2007 - 15 Months
– Microsoft(R) Works 8.0
– HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope
I also included a wireless laser mouse.

And if I could afford a Dell XPS, yes that is what I would get. But it's just too expensive for me.

Agreed, Vista if it is still an option (because Microsoft is paying off the manufacturers) would be the ideal way to go. Other than that, I'd be happy with that system. Good luck with it.

Oh too bad you're stuck with Norton AV too...that's an incredible pain in the ass for what it is worth.
