Today, the Canadian government may be toppled.

http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_31435.aspx

quick summary - the guy in power holds less than 50% of the ...senates...votes. think of it like a CEO who owns less than 50% of his shares. today the shareholders/senators who make up the majority - 51% when you add them together - will take a non-confidence vote to take down the guy in power, despite the fact that the people elected him, and not the other minority holders. anyone that was keeping track, will note that this was started about 2 months ago, but the ..senate.. was forced into recess until today. primary issue was the budget which had yet to even be written.

all this was going on during Obama's rise so little attention was paid from south of the border, but it was been noticed worldwide.

Soon our plan will be complete and we will be able to annex Canada and take all your bacon and your beer then allow you all to own fire arms.

When you say they elected him in the first place, keep in mind that 1) not everyone voted for him and 2) opinions change based on their performance

think it was around 40%, it was also less than a month after the election that it started. even the people who didn't vote for him aren't supporting it and the guy who initiated it was asked to resign as party leader, and the other team playing a major role are the quebec separatists.

That looks like a system that barely has any checks or balances.

Effectively that's like the Democrats being able to vote Bush out of the white house when they gained the majority in congress in '06.

its essentially a non-confidence vote which would likely force a new election.
